The Laramie Project is a documentary-styled play that analyzes the death of 21-year old Matthew Shepard, an openly gay college student who was brutally murdered because of his sexual identity. His vicious murder set off a nationwide debate about hate crimes and homophobia. The play was created by playwright/director Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project.
Laramie, Wyoming is a small town which became infamous overnight in the fall of 1998 due to Shepard’s murder. The Tectonic Theater Project actors traveled from New York to the town just four weeks after his death. Once there, they interviewed dozens of townspeople, collecting a wide array of different perspectives. Kaufman's goal was to create a play that focused not on the assault on Matthew Shepard, but on the community where such an attack could happen, and how the citizens reacted to the crime. The thoughts and opinions of Laramie residents, from all points of the political and social spectrum, are presented alongside re-enacted excerpts from the trials of the two men who attacked Matthew Shepard. Some people interviewed were directly connected to the case; others were ordinary citizens of Laramie … and the scope of their reactions to the crime is fascinating.
The dialogue and monologues which comprise The Laramie Project are taken from interviews, news reports, courtroom transcripts, and journal entries. It is an amazing theatrical collage that explores the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable.
The Laramie Project will stick with you well after the stage lights go out.
