As controversial as it was in the 1920s, is just as controversial today. Tennessee schoolteacher Bertram Cates is put on trial for violating the Butler Act, a state law that prohibits public school teachers from teaching evolution instead of creationism. Drawing intense national attention in the media with writer E. K. Hornbeck reporting, two of the nation's leading lawyers go head to head: Matthew Harrison Brady for the prosecution, and Henry Drummond for the defense. This battle between lawyers is as riveting as it is entertaining, and it's a battle that not only divides a town, but has an everlasting effect on the nation, and will have an effect on the theater goer long after the curtain comes down.
